A Memorable Memorial Day Menu

A Memorable Memorial Day Menu

Memorial Day is Monday, May 28th. Millions of Americans will hoist a few beers and down a burger, but we have a more memorable event in mind.

First and foremost, don’t forget to raise a flag. Honor the fallen by flying Old Glory, but she should remain at half mast until noon, as per tradition. Then invite friends and family over for a feast by the pool on the deck, dock or balcony – anywhere outside. Invite guests over about 2 hours before sunset. Enjoy the cooler evening temperature and plan for a backyard fire-pit after dark. String white twinkle lights over the table or in the trees for ambience. Provide guests with a bucket of Sparklers and other “benign” fireworks and glow sticks to celebrate with after dark.

Serve a menu of freshly shucked Oysters on ice along with Saltine Crackers, sliced lemon, salt, horseradish and spicy cocktail sauce. You can order the Oysters from Publix or your nearest fish market and arrange to pick them up just before your party. Order them pre-shucked and keep them on ice.

Purchase a bushel of little-neck or cherry-stone clams form the fish market and steam them on the grill with some local lobster. Serve with some fresh-cut homemade fries with lemon-mayo and a crisp Caesar salad. Finish with simple coconut cupcakes for dessert.
